Benefits of a Surveillance System

Benefits of a Surveillance System

There is a long list of benefits to installing a surveillance system in your home. Not only does it help you protect against property theft and vandalism, but it also gives you the ability to monitor your property anytime, anywhere through a mobile device. Having 24/7 visibility of your home or business offers peace of mind that what you value is safe.

You’ve probably heard surveillance system and security system used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two.

What’s the Difference between Surveillance Systems and Security Systems?

A security system is a monitored alarm system that you typically pay for on a monthly basis. The services provided under this payment can range a bit, but at the very least, it signals 911 in an emergency if an alarm is triggered. A surveillance system, also known as CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television), consists of strategically placed video cameras that capture footage, which can be recorded and/or broadcast in real time to video monitors, computers or mobile devices.

Ideally, you want a combination of both a surveillance system and a security system to keep your home or business safe, but we know paying to have your security system monitored isn’t always an option. If you don’t want to pay to have it monitored, there are two alternative security system options:

  • Self-monitored security systems: This means it’s up to you to respond to the alerts sent to you.
  • Local security system: This sounds loud alarms/sirens if sensors are triggered. The loud siren does not alert authorities – the sound is simply meant to be a deterrent and hopefully a neighbor (or you) hears the alarm going off to call the police.

How Do I Pick Which System to Get?

Benefits of a Surveillance System Benefits of a Security System
  • Prevent and detect crime – provides material evidence in the event of a crime
  • Monitor young kids and/or pets when you aren’t there (or employees at a business)
  • Constant surveillance coverage
  • Access to recorded/broadcast footage available
  • Presence of cameras acts as a deterrent
  • 24/7 monitoring (paid service)
  • Notifications sent to you if there’s suspicious activity
  • Security sensors (carbon monoxide, flood, motion, heat/smoke, window/door open, glass break, etc)
  • Quick alerts & response times in emergencies if you pay to have it monitored

A surveillance or security system (or any combination of the two) can lower your monthly insurance premiums since your property is safer. Installing one of these systems will save you money in the end, which is why it’s worth the upfront cost to install it.
